ON THE FIELD REFEREE GAME CHECKLIST
  • Arrive at your scheduled pitch at least 15 minutes early.  You will need that much time to perform your pre-game checks.
  • Make sure you are familiar with the rules pertaining to the grade you are refereeing. Reaffirm these with each coach, each week.
  • Check nets and make sure goals are secured and anchored.
  • Introduce yourself to the coaches.  Ask coaches to line up their players prior to starting game.  Check players for shin guards, cleats, and uniform. Make sure they are free of dangling jewelry or hair accessories.
  • Enforce the technical area.  Parents should be 3 feet from sideline.  If there is a problem with either of these issues, ask coach to remedy situation.
  • It is the coaches’ responsibility to keep parents and their teams under control.  If you feel parents are being unreasonable or negatively vocal, ask the coach to intervene.
  • Remember that YOU are in control of the game.  All players and coaches should look to you and respect your calls.  Be respectful, yet firm. Do not permit the game to get out of control. Blow your whistle LOUDLY and assertively.  Keep track of time.
  • Player safety is your number one concern – act accordingly at all times! Your safety is also paramount.

During the Game

§ Be watchful especially for rough play (safety first)
§ Stop the game immediately if you suspect a player is hurt.
§ For routine events, be prepared to explain calls to younger/newer players    (help players learn the game)
§ Blow the whistle loudly and use with firm hand signals
§ Be alert for coaches calling for player substitutions

After the Game
